Lizzo joined a rock-prog band where she sang as well as played flute. Her family had moved to Denver and she was by herself to start her career in Houston. Lizzo was living on her own in her car, sometimes lying on the floor of her recording studio in the studio and washed her clothes at the gym. Lizzo lost her father when she was twenty-one years old. It was a devastating loss for the two of them as they were very close. Following the death of her father, Lizzo quit the group in 2010. After a brief visit to Denver, Lizzo moved to Minneapolis in 2011 upon the request of a close friend. She soon became a part of the city's music scene. She was a part of the girl group Chalice, GRRRL PRTY. Her debut album Lizzobangers came out in 2013 via an independent label.
